Historic Milestone for Teacher Education in Africa: AFFiT Inducts Dean of Education, Nasarawa State University, as Honorary Research Fellow
Strengthening Institutional Collaboration for the Future of African Education
The African Forum for Innovative Teachers (AFFiT) has recorded another significant milestone in its mission to transform teacher education, research, innovation, and professional development across Africa.
In a strategic engagement aimed at deepening collaboration with institutions of higher learning, an AFFiT delegation led by its Director-General, Dr. Ogah Emmanuel Edeoja, paid an official visit to the Faculty of Education, Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK). The visit culminated in the formal induction of Professor Usman S. Gbari, Dean of the Faculty of Education, as an Honorary Research Fellow of the African Forum for Innovative Teachers (HRFA).
This induction represents more than a ceremonial recognition; it marks the beginning of a strategic partnership designed to strengthen teacher preparation, educational research, innovation, and capacity development within higher education institutions.
Building a Network of Educational Leaders Across Africa
The AFFiT Honorary Research Fellowship is a prestigious initiative established to unite influential leaders in education under a common platform dedicated to advancing excellence in teaching, learning, research, and educational leadership.
The fellowship brings together distinguished academic leaders, including Deans of Faculties of Education, Vice-Chancellors, Provosts of Colleges of Education, Rectors of Polytechnics, Directors of Academic Institutions, and other key stakeholders who share a commitment to improving educational outcomes across the continent.
Through this growing network, AFFiT seeks to foster collaboration among institutions, encourage knowledge exchange, support research-driven solutions, and create sustainable opportunities for educators and learners at all levels.
Professor Gbari’s induction therefore represents an important addition to a growing community of educational leaders who are actively contributing to the development of a stronger and more innovative education system for Africa.
A Strategic Partnership for Educational Transformation
During the visit, extensive discussions were held between the AFFiT delegation and the leadership of the Faculty of Education, Nasarawa State University. The conversations focused on identifying practical areas of collaboration that would benefit lecturers, researchers, student-teachers, and educational administrators.
The proposed partnership will create opportunities for joint initiatives in teacher professional development, research support, academic publishing, innovation projects, grant acquisition, policy engagement, educational leadership development, curriculum improvement, entrepreneurship education, and community-impact programmes.
Particular emphasis was placed on developing sustainable pathways through which lecturers and student-teachers can access research fellowships, conferences, professional certifications, mentorship opportunities, innovation challenges, international collaborations, and employability enhancement programmes.
These initiatives are expected to strengthen both the academic and professional capacities of future educators while positioning institutions as centres of excellence in educational innovation and leadership.
Broad Institutional Support and Commitment
The induction ceremony attracted Heads of Departments within the Faculty of Education, members of the university management team, and other stakeholders who expressed enthusiasm about the opportunities that the partnership presents.
Participants acknowledged the importance of stronger collaboration between educational institutions and professional bodies in addressing emerging challenges within the education sector. They also reiterated their commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance research productivity, lecturer development, student success, and educational innovation.
The overwhelming support demonstrated during the engagement reflects a shared understanding that meaningful transformation in education requires strategic partnerships, collaborative leadership, and continuous investment in human capital development.
Why This Development Matters for Student-Teachers
One of the most significant outcomes of this partnership is the direct impact it is expected to have on student-teachers.
As Faculties of Education increasingly become active participants in AFFiT’s network of Honorary Research Fellows, student-teachers gain access to opportunities that extend beyond traditional classroom learning. These opportunities include mentorship from experienced educators, participation in research projects, access to grants and scholarships, leadership development programmes, professional networking platforms, digital learning experiences, and exposure to innovative teaching methodologies.
Such opportunities are critical in preparing a new generation of educators who are not only academically competent but also adaptable, innovative, research-oriented, and globally competitive.
For many student-teachers, these engagements provide practical pathways for career growth while strengthening their ability to make meaningful contributions within their classrooms and communities.
Excellence.
Advancing a Continental Vision for Educational Excellence
The induction of Professor Usman S. Gbari as an Honorary Research Fellow reflects AFFiT’s broader vision of creating a continent-wide ecosystem that connects educational institutions, researchers, policymakers, lecturers, and development partners.
By fostering stronger collaboration among institutions, AFFiT is helping to build a framework through which innovative ideas can be shared, educational challenges can be collectively addressed, and sustainable solutions can be developed for the future of African education.
As more Deans, Provosts, Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, and educational leaders join the Honorary Research Fellowship network, the potential for large-scale impact continues to grow. This expanding community is laying the foundation for a future where African educators are empowered with the knowledge, skills, resources, and partnerships needed to drive educational transformation across the continent.
Looking Ahead
AFFiT congratulates Professor Usman S. Gbari, HRFA, on his well-deserved induction and looks forward to the impactful collaborations that will emerge from this partnership with the Faculty of Education, Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
This achievement represents another important step in AFFiT’s journey toward strengthening teacher education and educational leadership throughout Africa.
Several other Faculties of Education, Colleges of Education, Polytechnics, and Universities across Nigeria and the continent are already scheduled to join the AFFiT Honorary Research Fellowship network in the coming months.
Together, through collaboration, innovation, research, and leadership, we are building the future of African education.
