AFRICAN WOMEN IN RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP ADVANCEMENT PROJECT (AWIRELAP)
Empowering Africa’s Present and Future Generation of Women Researchers, Educators and Leaders
Africa’s Future Depends on the Women We Empower Today
Across Africa, thousands of brilliant women possess the knowledge, creativity and determination to solve some of our continent’s greatest challenges. Yet many never receive the mentorship, funding, recognition or leadership opportunities needed to transform their ideas into lasting impact.
The African Women in Research, Education and Leadership Advancement Project (AWIRELAP) was established to change this narrative.
AWIRELAP is a bold continental movement that identifies, develops, funds, mentors and celebrates outstanding African women, creating pathways into research, education, innovation, entrepreneurship, industry, governance and public leadership.
We are not simply building a project.
We are building Africa’s largest ecosystem for women researchers and leaders.
Our Vision
To build Africa's most influential network of women researchers, educators, innovators and leaders driving educational transformation, research excellence and sustainable development across the continent.
Our Mission
To identify, train, fund, mentor, recognize, connect and empower women through research grants, scholarships, leadership development, industry partnerships, innovation support and strategic advocacy that advance gender equity and sustainable development across Africa.
Why AWIRELAP Matters
Our Mandate
Despite representing a significant proportion of Africa’s academic community, women remain underrepresented in funded research, leadership positions, innovation ecosystems and policy-making.
Too many groundbreaking ideas remain unpublished.
Too many research findings never receive funding.
Too many women with exceptional potential never receive the opportunities they deserve.
AWIRELAP exists to bridge that gap.

By 2037, AWIRELAP aims to become Africa’s largest movement dedicated to advancing women in research, education and leadership.
Our greatest legacy will not simply be the number of women we recognize or the grants we award.
It will be the creation of a permanent African-owned system that continually empowers future generations of women researchers, innovators, educators and leaders for the next century and beyond.
