AFFiT Leadership and Stakeholders’ Retreat 2026: Advancing Research, Leadership, Innovation and Professional Excellence

Abuja, Nigeria | 21–22 August 2026

The African Forum for Innovative Teachers (AFFiT) has recorded another significant milestone with the successful hosting of the AFFiT Leadership and Stakeholders’ Retreat 2026, a strategic gathering designed to strengthen leadership, research, professional development, institutional collaboration and innovation across Nigeria’s education and professional landscape.

Held on 21 and 22 August 2026 at the Federal Science and Technical College, Orozo, Abuja, the two-day retreat brought together AFFiT national executives, chapter and unit leaders, committee members, educators, researchers, professionals and representatives of key government institutions and agencies.

The retreat provided a platform for stakeholders to reflect on AFFiT’s growth, examine emerging opportunities, strengthen its leadership structure and develop practical strategies for expanding its programmes and impact.

Bringing Leaders and Professionals Together

The 2026 AFFiT Leadership and Stakeholders’ Retreat was particularly significant because of the diversity of professionals and institutions represented.

Participants and stakeholders included distinguished personnel from strategic institutions and agencies such as the:

  • Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)

  • National Institute for Security Studies (NISS)

  • Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)

  • Federal Fire Service (FFS)

  • Nigeria Correctional Service – FCT

  • Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)

  • National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)

  • National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE)

  • National Mathematical Centre (NMC)

  • Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC)

The participation of professionals from these sectors reflected an important dimension of AFFiT’s growing fellowship network: the recognition that education, research and innovation cannot exist in isolation from the wider professional and national development ecosystem.

AFFiT describes itself as a network connecting educators, scholars, institutions and other stakeholders around a shared mission of transforming education through innovation, research, mentorship and professional growth.

A Retreat Focused on Growth and Institutional Development

Unlike a conventional conference, the AFFiT Leadership and Stakeholders’ Retreat was designed as a working and strategic session for the organisation’s leadership.

Discussions focused on strengthening AFFiT’s internal structures and expanding its reach across Nigeria and beyond.

Among the key areas addressed were organisational growth, chapter expansion, leadership development, career development, programme development, research, innovation and stakeholder engagement.

The retreat gave leaders the opportunity to examine how AFFiT can build stronger chapters, improve coordination, create more opportunities for members and fellows, and deepen collaboration with institutions and professionals.

The AFFiT Growth Strategy was one of the major areas of attention, with discussions centred on building a stronger and more sustainable organisation capable of responding to the changing needs of educators, researchers and professionals.

The Chapters Expansion Strategy also received attention as AFFiT continues to strengthen its presence across states and institutions.

The objective is not simply to establish more chapters, but to build active chapters that can deliver meaningful programmes, support members, promote research and innovation, and contribute to education and community development.

Leadership, Career Development and Professional Growth

Leadership development was another important component of the retreat.

AFFiT’s leadership and career development sessions emphasised the importance of equipping its members and leaders with the knowledge, confidence and strategic thinking required to operate effectively in today’s professional environment.

The discussions also reinforced the idea that leadership should go beyond occupying positions. It should involve responsibility, innovation, service, accountability and the ability to create measurable impact.

This approach is consistent with AFFiT’s broader leadership and mentorship programmes, through which the organisation seeks to connect professional development with practical impact in schools, institutions and communities.

Developing Programmes That Respond to Real Needs

Programme development was also central to the retreat.

Stakeholders examined how AFFiT can continue to develop programmes that respond directly to the needs of teachers, researchers, student-teachers, education leaders and professionals.

AFFiT currently operates across several programme areas, including membership and fellowship, continuous professional development, scholarships, research grants, innovation, institutional research, leadership and mentorship, industry and commercialisation, welfare and community impact.

The retreat therefore provided an opportunity to consider how these programmes can be better coordinated and expanded to create stronger outcomes for members and partner institutions.

Research and Innovation at the Heart of AFFiT

Research remained one of the strongest themes of the retreat.

AFFiT is expanding its fellowship structure to include different categories of educators, researchers and professionals, including Research Fellows, Personnel Research Fellows and Professional Research Fellows.

The induction of selected personnel and professionals during the retreat represented more than an honorary recognition. It reflected AFFiT’s effort to create a network of professionals who can contribute their expertise, experience and knowledge to research, policy, innovation and national development.

AFFiT’s research and innovation programmes are designed around practitioner-led and solution-driven research addressing real classroom, institutional and education-policy challenges. The organisation also promotes institutional research and the commercialisation of innovative research outputs.

Through this expanding fellowship network, AFFiT is creating opportunities for professionals outside the traditional education sector to become part of conversations around research, innovation and development.

Induction of Personnel and Professional Research Fellows

One of the major highlights of the retreat was the formal induction of selected personnel and professionals as AFFiT Personnel Research Fellows and Professional Research Fellows.

The new fellows came from a range of critical institutions, bringing diverse professional experience into the AFFiT network.

Their induction reinforces AFFiT’s belief that research should not be restricted to the classroom or university environment. Professionals working in security, law enforcement, public administration, road safety, emergency management, regulation, education, science and other fields also possess valuable knowledge that can contribute to evidence-based solutions.

The fellowship therefore provides a platform for professionals to connect, exchange knowledge, participate in research and contribute to AFFiT’s wider vision.

Supporting the “Train One Teacher, Train the Nation” Vision

The retreat also provided an important platform for advancing the “Train One Teacher, Train the Nation” vision and discussions around large-scale teacher capacity development.

A major initiative connected to the retreat was the proposed 20,000 Teachers Continuous Professional Development and Capacity-Building Training across Zone C, Benue State, being pursued in collaboration with AFFiT under the ANUNE 2027 initiative.

The proposed programme focuses on areas including:

  • Modern Pedagogy

  • Digital Literacy and Artificial Intelligence in Education

  • STEM Education

  • Leadership and School Improvement

  • Inclusive Education

  • Professional Ethics

  • Literacy and Numeracy Development

The initiative reflects AFFiT’s broader commitment to continuous professional development and practical capacity building for educators.

Recognising Leadership and Supporting Strategic Partnerships

The retreat also featured the recognition of individuals who have demonstrated commitment to education, leadership and development.

Among the significant engagements was the recognition of Hon. Dr. Francis Agbo Ottah, popularly known as Ozigizaga – The Whirlwind and Ugbagidi of Enone, including his investiture as an AFFiT Honorary Ambassador Fellow in connection with the teacher capacity-development initiative.

Such recognitions are part of AFFiT’s broader strategy of building relationships with influential professionals, leaders, institutions and stakeholders who can contribute to education development and teacher empowerment.

From Research to Practical Innovation

A recurring message throughout the retreat was that research should lead to practical solutions.

AFFiT is increasingly positioning its research fellowship not simply as a recognition platform, but as a network through which researchers and professionals can collaborate, develop ideas, solve problems and translate knowledge into practical outcomes.

This is reflected in AFFiT’s emphasis on research grants, innovation programmes, institutional excellence, industry engagement and commercialisation.

The organisation’s wider ecosystem is therefore designed to connect research with real-world impact.

Building a Stronger AFFiT Network

The retreat also reinforced the importance of strong internal leadership.

National executives, state chapter leaders, team and committee leaders were brought together to strengthen coordination and establish a clearer direction for the organisation’s next phase of growth.

The discussions encouraged leaders to think beyond their individual offices and responsibilities and to see themselves as part of a larger continental movement working to improve education and professional development.

For AFFiT, expansion is not simply about numbers. It is about creating an active network of people who can identify problems, develop solutions, support one another and contribute meaningfully to their institutions and communities.

A Broader Vision for African Education

At the heart of the retreat was a simple but ambitious vision: to build people and institutions capable of transforming Africa through education, research, innovation and leadership.

AFFiT’s current platform brings together student-teachers, classroom teachers, lecturers, researchers, education leaders, policymakers and professionals through a structured membership and fellowship ecosystem.

This broad network allows AFFiT to approach education from multiple perspectives and encourages collaboration between people working in different sectors.

The Leadership and Stakeholders’ Retreat demonstrated what is possible when these different groups come together around a common purpose.

Looking Ahead

As the retreat came to a close, the message was clear: the work does not end with the retreat.

The ideas, strategies and commitments developed during the two-day gathering are expected to translate into stronger programmes, expanded chapters, deeper institutional partnerships, more research opportunities, professional development initiatives and greater support for educators and professionals.

For AFFiT, the 2026 Leadership and Stakeholders’ Retreat was therefore not merely an event. It was a strategic moment to pause, reflect, plan and prepare for a bigger phase of impact.

With its growing network of educators, researchers, professionals, institutions and stakeholders, AFFiT is positioning itself as a platform where research meets practice, leadership meets service, and innovation meets opportunity.

The organisation remains committed to building a community of professionals who are prepared not only to teach and work, but to research, lead, innovate and transform.

Congratulations to the Newly Inducted AFFiT Research Fellows

AFFiT congratulates all newly inducted Personnel Research Fellows and Professional Research Fellows and appreciates the national executives, chapter leaders, institutional representatives, partners, facilitators and stakeholders whose contributions made the 2026 Leadership and Stakeholders’ Retreat a meaningful success.

The journey continues.
