Empowering Schools. Strengthening Systems. Rewarding Excellence.

The African Forum for Innovative Teachers (AFFIT) School Development Project (SDP) is a transformative initiative designed to support schools by addressing critical infrastructure, learning, and professional development needs while promoting accountability, innovation, and long-term educational growth.

Unlike traditional intervention programs built on random donations, the AFFIT School Development Project operates through a structured, transparent, and merit-based system where participating schools actively demonstrate commitment to development before receiving support.

The project is designed to create lasting impact by strengthening schools, empowering teachers, improving learning environments, and building sustainable educational systems across Nigeria and beyond.

How the Project Works

The School Development Project follows a carefully designed multi-phase structure to ensure transparency, credibility, and measurable impact.

Phase 1: Training & Onboarding

A total of 150 schools are invited to participate in the project.

Each participating school nominates either:

  • A management staff member, or
  • A highly competent teacher

Participants undergo orientation and training sessions covering:

  • School development thinking
  • Data accuracy and reporting
  • The AFFIT ecosystem and opportunities

At the end of this phase, schools become officially onboarded into the project.

Phase 2: Data Collection & Qualification

Participating schools complete a detailed assessment questionnaire covering:

  • School profile
  • Infrastructure status
  • Teacher capacity
  • Student population
  • Priority institutional needs

Mandatory Qualification Requirement

Each school must produce at least five (5) AFFIT Fellows through registration, sponsorship, or part-payment support.

This requirement demonstrates institutional commitment and serves as a core qualification criterion.

Phase 3: Verification & Field Assessment

Shortlisted schools undergo physical verification by the Project Verification Panel.

This stage includes:

  • Facility inspections
  • Validation of submitted data
  • Meetings with school leadership

Only credible and committed schools proceed to the next stage.

Phase 4: Scoring & Impact Ranking

Schools are evaluated using a transparent scoring system based on:

  • Level of need
  • Accuracy of data submitted
  • Participation and AFFIT registration commitment
  • Leadership involvement
  • Potential impact of intervention

This ensures a fair, accountable, and fundable selection process.

Phase 5: Final Selection & Grand Finale

The top 10 schools emerge as project winners and receive development support based on their identified needs.

The Grand Finale event brings together all participating schools for:

  • Public recognition
  • Awards and honors
  • AFFIT Fellowship induction ceremonies
  • Educational networking and celebration

Winning schools receive direct intervention support while all participating schools remain part of the growing AFFIT educational network.
